What is a pool filter?

Updated: Feb 22, 2023

A pool filter is an essential component of any swimming pool system and is used to remove unwanted particles and debris from the water. It helps to keep the pool clean and free from dirt, sand, leaves, insects, and other contaminants that can make the water cloudy or even unsanitary. A pool filter is typically located somewhere along the circulation line, which means that water is pumped through the filter before being returned to the pool.

There are three main types of pool filters: sand filters, cartridge filters, and DE (diatomaceous earth) filters. Each type of filter works in a slightly different way, but they all serve the same basic purpose of removing unwanted particles from the water.

Sand filters are the most common type of pool filter, and are typically used in residential swimming pools. They consist of a large tank filled with a special type of sand, and water is pumped through the sand at high pressure. As the water passes through the sand, the sand captures and holds onto any particles or debris that are too large to pass through. Over time, the sand becomes clogged with debris, and the filter needs to be backwashed (i.e., the water flow is reversed) to flush out the trapped particles and refresh the sand.

Cartridge filters are a newer type of pool filter that uses a replaceable cartridge to capture and hold onto particles. The cartridge is made of a pleated material, similar to the filter in a vacuum cleaner, and is designed to capture even very small particles. When the cartridge becomes dirty, it can be removed and cleaned with a hose or replaced entirely. Cartridge filters require less maintenance than sand filters and are typically used in smaller or more specialized pools.

DE filters use a fine powder made from diatomaceous earth to capture particles. The powder is spread over a series of filter grids inside a tank, and water is pumped through the grids. As the water passes through, the diatomaceous earth powder captures particles as small as 5 microns. When the filter becomes dirty, the powder needs to be replaced by adding more to the tank.

No matter what type of filter is used, proper maintenance is essential to ensure that it operates effectively. This includes regularly cleaning or replacing the filter media, backwashing or replacing the sand, and checking and adjusting the water chemistry to prevent buildup and damage to the filter. Neglecting pool filter maintenance can lead to a buildup of debris and bacteria, which can cause health problems for swimmers and make the pool uninviting to use.

In summary, a pool filter is an essential component of any swimming pool system and is used to remove unwanted particles and debris from the water. There are three main types of pool filters (sand, cartridge, and DE), each of which captures particles in a different way. Regular maintenance is essential to keep the filter working effectively and to prevent health and safety issues from developing.
